In order to forge a link between the Turehu people and the māori, Parearohi was sent by her father, Te Rangipouri, to marry Heiraura. Parearohi would spend the nights with her husband and would leave before daybreak. Heiraura, having not seen his wife, decided to deceive her into staying until it was morning. He blocked up all the chinks in their house to block the light. The next morning, Heiraura opened the doorway of the house to let the sun illuminate his wife. He was so struck by her beauty, he went to tell his friends about her. Parearohi, with her husband's feather plume in her hair, began to cry. Upon his return, Parearohi looked out to the ocean and sang this song of farewell to her husband. She then returned to her home across the sea.

'He Waiata nā Parearohi', a traditional Ngāpuhi song, is taken from Ngā Moteatea, compiled and translated by Sir Apirana Ngata and Pei Te Hurinui Jones. Ngakuru Pene Haare dictated the text of the song and its provenance to Te Raumoa (H. R. Balneavis), in Wellington, on the 24th September, 1924.
