Music From Her

Festival

Our Music From Her festival, held in mid-October, will celebrate, support and encourage diverse voices of women working in music in New Zealand, in the year of the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. We hope you can join us - we've made most events free or very low cost so that everyone can attend.

In an exhibition at Thistle Hall Gallery (9-14 Oct), six female sound artists from New Zealand and abroad will showcase their compositions and installations. Join us for the exhibition opening event on 10 October at 6pm - all welcome.

A day of panel discussions on gender issues in music will take place on Sunday 14 October. Female composers, performers and scholars in music in Aotearoa will come together to explore, celebrate and share their musical identities and histories.

And finally, our pinnacle event, the Suffrage Songs Recomposed concert at Hannah Playhouse, will see a collection of 1890s women’s suffrage songs texts made modern by nine stellar female composers. One of the composers is NZSM PhD candidate Jasmine Lovell-Smith, whose great great grandfather was married to Kate Sheppard, so we're particularly pleased to have her putting her own spin on a suffrage song! Various singers will be joined by instrumental, electronic and taonga pūoro musicians to perform re-imaginings of these politically trailblazing texts. We'll also present the winning entry from our Lullaby Competition for the Prime Minister - which you don't want to miss!

Kate Sheppard and Meri Te Tai Mangakāhia, we salute you, and celebrate your work with these musical voices, in solidarity.
