Llewelyn Jones

Composer

Born: 1895 Died: 1978

Biography

Llewelyn Jones lived from 1895-1978. He was a noted Auckland pianist and composer and began his musical career as a choirboy in Wales. He was brought to New Zealand at the age of 12 and continued his musical training. After returning from active service at Gallipoli during the First World War, he branched out into a musical career ranging from being a theatre pianist in the silent movie days to an early association with the radio station IZB and several American touring musical shows.

His first major composition, the Maori Rhapsody, was first performed in 1939 by the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, and more recently by the University of Auckland Orchestra. The work was the first major New Zealand musical composition to be published with the assistance of the Australasian Performing Right Association, and has been performed by both the Sydney and Welsh symphony orchestras.

Mr Jones also wrote many small-scale compositions, including songs which are as yet unpublished. He was a life member of the Australasian Performing Right Association and a life member of the Auckland Grand Opera Society.
