Michael Calvert

Composer, Performer

Biography

New Zealand guitarist, lutenist and composer, Michael Calvert, has performed both as a soloist and as a member of several chamber ensembles throughout New Zealand, Australia, USA and Brazil. His compositions have been performed worldwide and featured at such festivals as De Ysbreker (Holland), Unge Tonekunstnere (Denmark), Musica Nova (Brazil) and Festival Internacional Guitarra (Mexico). He studied at Auckland University, Wellington Polytechnic, and Brooklyn College CUNY. His teachers have included Milton Babbitt and Robert Starer (composition), David Starobin and John Mills (guitar), Robert Barto, Paul O'Dette, and Nigel North (lute). Michael Calvert has also worked extensively as a teacher and record producer. He lives in New York City.

Michael's work Fantasia in August for solo guitar won the 2011 New Zealand Classical Guitar Composition Competition. Acclaimed New Zealand classical guitarist Matthew Marshall released an album of Michael's compositions in June 2015 titled Rhapsody on a Riff.
